Leland stendford Junior University is a private reaserch university in Standford, California. Standford is known for it's academic strength, wealth,  proximity  to Silicon Valley, and ranking as one of the world's top universities. Since opening in 1891, Standford's faculty and students have worked to improve the health and wellbeing of people around the world through the dicovery and application of knowledge.

The university was founded in 1885 byLeland an Jane Standford in memory of their only child, leland Stendford, who had died of typical fever at age 15. The university is organized around three traditional scools onsisting of 40 academic departments at the undergradute and gradute levl and four orifessional schools that focus on graduate orograms in law medicine, education and business. Students compate in 36 versity sports,  and the university is ine of the two private universities in the division I FBS Pac-12 Conference.

In October 2018, 83 Nobel laureats, 27 Turing award Laureates, and 8 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with Standford as students, alumni, faculty or staff.

Standford has more than 16,300 students, 2,180 postdoctoral scholars. Standford is an international institution enrolling students from all 50U.S atates and more than 90 other countries. It is also an athletics powehouse, with 900 current student-athlets and a history of 137 national championships and 23 consecutive Directors' Cups awarded to the top intercollegiate athletics program in the nation


Standford's official seal contains the German words, ''Die Luft der Friheit weiht'', which translates as ''the wind of freedom blows''
